Baby Hands releases its first EP Sorry, Earth is Closed Today April 16 on Bandcamp.
The four song EP was written by brothers Andrew and Neil Waldschutz , along with Carter Russell, as part of their group performance class at InterAction School of Performing Arts.
“We met Carter at music camp and we all became friends, says Andrew, “So we decided to start a band.”
The trio, working with instructor Chuck Teed, learned a variety of songs as part of their classes, but ultimately decided to try their hand at writing. The resulting EP features whimsical lyrics about zombies and dinosaurs, but leans heavily on rock influences such as Green Day and the Ramones.
“We wanted to write our own music, and create some unique content,” says Neil. “We’re really happy with how it turned out.”
The EP’s first single, ‘Sanitization’, was written at the start of the pandemic via Zoom. “It was a lot harder to write because we couldn’t play together, but it ended up being one of our best songs,” says Andrew. The lyrics were written by the group as part of a writing exercise, and were inspired by Covid-19. “Everyone can relate to it because we’re all going through it,” adds Neil.
Sorry, Earth is Closed Today was recorded live at the Imperial Theatre in June 2020 as part of its Incubator program. Baby Hands returned to the Imperial in March 2021 to record a video for ‘Sanitation’, which was shot by local filmmaker Tyler Warren Ellis.
“It was great to perform on such a big stage,” says Neil. “The people at the Imperial were really great to us, and it felt super professional.”
All proceeds from the sale of sorry, Earth Is Closed Today will be donated to InterAction School of Performing Arts. The EP will be available via other streaming services at a later date.
